Hiring the Nonprofit Executive: What to Know for Volunteer-Led Searches

One of the most important responsibilities of a nonprofit board is filling the organization's executive leadership role when it is vacant. When the time comes to hire new long-term leadership, some boards work with a search consultant while others undertake the process on their own. In either case, board and staff leaders, including interim executives, need to know how an executive search process works and what roles they can play to make sure their process is conducted with integrity and results in a successful outcome.

This two-hour seminar will focus both on the foundational principles of an effective executive search and the specific steps recommended for an optimal process.

We'll also talk about some of the most common mistakes made in executive searches and how to avoid them, so that your organization's cause has the leadership it deserves.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this event, participants will have tools and information to:

  • Outline the first steps in any successful executive search.
  • Clearly identify the responsibilities of a volunteer executive search committee.
  • Recognize the appropriate roles for current leadership, including an interim executive, and staff to play in the process.
  • Effectively determine how long an executive search process might take.
  • Identify the keys to a successful onboarding process after the hire.
